The Biggest Games Coming in 2022

In part due to the number of games that have been postponed out of 2021, 2022 has acquired one of the most promising video game lineups in recent memory. More than 100 games are scheduled to be released in 2022, and with the new year fast approaching, we’re highlighting the most promising projects on the horizon, from tentpole first-party titles such as Breath of the Wild 2, God of War Ragnarok, and Starfield to much-anticipated multiplatform releases such as Suicide Squad: slay the Justice League.

In the year ahead, there’s a lot to watch forward to, so let’s jump in. These are the 48 most important games scheduled to be released in 2022, chronologically. This list only included games with officially stated release dates/windows. The Northern Hemisphere is the home of seasonal (spring, fall) release windows.

Rainbow Six Extraction

 

Rainbow Six Extraction, a PvE spinoff of Ubisoft’s ultra-popular shooter Rainbow Six Siege, is released in 2022. Extraction is grounded on the Siege foundation and pits teams of three against a parasitic alien threat. Since it was unveiled at E3 2019, the shooter has seen multiple delays (as well as a name change).

Pokemon Legends: Arceus

Pokemon Legends: Arceus, the first major Switch exclusive of the year, brings Nintendo’s long-standing monster-collecting franchise in a fresh direction. Arceus, the series’ first core game set in a (semi) open world, upends traditional methods for encountering and battling Pokemon.

Dying Light 2: Stay Human

Dying Light 2: stay Human takes players to a new region of Techland’s zombie-filled open world, which was released seven years after the original. The parkour playground is four times larger this time, and developer Techland has tried to create more fluidity between traversal and combat. Rosario Dawson (The Mandalorian) will also take a significant role in the story’s narrative.

Sifu

Sifu is a new kung-fu game produced by Sloclap, the studio behind 2017’s combat-focused RPG Absolver. Sifu features a unique mechanic around death in addition to smooth martial-arts gameplay: When the playable character expires, they will emerge as an older version of themselves, a symbol of the wisdom that grows with age and experience. However, if you become too ancient (or die too much), death will eventually result in a “definitive game over.”

CrossfireX

Early next year, Crossfire, the popular PC shooter, will be released for the first time on consoles. On February 10, both the single-player and free-to-play multiplayer modes will be released. The multiplayer component is being handled by Crossfire developer Smilegate, and the two solo-player campaigns are being created by Remedy ( Alan Wake, Control), both of which will be available at launch.

Total War: Warhammer 3

Total War: Warhammer 3, the lauded strategy series by Sega, will be released in 2022. For this third game, Creative Assembly is presenting two new playable factions, Kislev and Cathay, as part of “the most diverse array of legendary heroes, giant monsters, flying creatures, and magical powers that the series has ever featured.” Total War: Warhammer 3 will be released on Xbox Game Pass for PC.

Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West is the first of three big PlayStation first-party exclusives on this list, and it continues Aloy’s journey as she probes the mystical Red Blight that is threatening life on Earth. It’s one of the most anticipated games of the year, and if nothing else, it promises to be stunning (as exhibited by the trailer below).

Elden Ring

When FromSoftware unveiled Elden Ring, a third-person action-adventure created in collaboration with A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R., at E3 2019, it headed off an unstoppable hype train. Martin. If our hands-on preview of Elden Ring is any indication, EldenRing may live up to its extraordinary hype. Elden Ring will be released on February 25, so we don’t need to stay much longer to find out.

Evil Dead: The Game

In 2022, Evil Dead: The Game will keep the trend of asymmetrical multiplayer games based on classic horror franchises. Evil Dead will offer co-op and solo-player options in addition to a PvP mode in which one player controls the Kandarian Demon. Bruce Campell, returning his role as Ash Williams, is perhaps best of all able to add to the game’s voice. Groovy.

Babylon’s Fall

Babylon’s Fall will be released on PlayStation consoles and PC, nearly four years after it was announced at E3 2018. Babylon’s Fall is another combat-focused game from PlatinumGames, the studio behind excellent action games such as Bayonetta and Nier: Automata. It’s playable solo or cooperatively with up to three others, but regardless of how you participate, you’ll need a constant online connection.

Gran Turismo 7

On March 4, 2022, Sony’s historic Gran Turismo series will be released for PS5. following the success of Microsoft’s Forza Horizon 5 in 2021, racing fans are keen to hear how Sony’s premier racing sim fares in its next-gen debut. Polyphony Digital is hoping to connect the past of the 25-year-long franchise to the present and future with GT7.

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin

Stranger of Paradise is a unique type of Final Fantasy game made by the studio behind Ninja Gaiden and Nioh, an action-heavy Soulslike. Despite the fact that the gameplay is significantly different from traditional FF games, creative producer Tetsuya Nomura assures fans that “the blood of Final Fantasy flows through Stranger of Paradise’s veins.”

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands

In late March, this Dungeons and Dragons-inspired Borderlands spinoff will be released on consoles and PC. Tiny Tina is the Dungeon Master for Wonderlands’ story, which includes the return of everyone’s favorite diamond unicorn Butt Stallion and sends players on an epic battle against the Dragon Lord. Will Arnett is the Dragon Lord, Andy Samberg is Valentine, Wanda Sykes is Frette, and Ashly Burch is Tiny Tina in the voice cast.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl

 

It’s been a slow road from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 to S. The game was first revealed in 2010, and it was rumored to be canceled in 2011 before being actually canceled in 2012. After a few years, developer GSC Game World started new on the series’ first numbered sequel, which will be a Series X and launch on Xbox Game Pass in 2020 as a “unique blend of FPS, immersive sim, and horror.” For the first three months of January, the S.S. console is only available.

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals

The supernatural walk-and-talk adventure at Night School Studio will be accompanied by a sequel in 2022. Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is based on the same universe as the original, but it features a fresh cast of characters, headed by Riley, an environmental researcher. Because it features the return of Oxenfree’s signature dialogue system, Lost Signals’ gameplay mechanics will be largely familiar for those who played the first.

The Day Before

The Day Before was catapulted into the spotlight. The Day Before is an open-world MMO survival game located in a zombie-filled, post-pandemic America, as far as players can be imagined. The Day Before features animal Crossing-like base building in addition to the usual MMO trappings such as PvP combat, resource gathering, and social hubs.

Forspoken

Forspoken is all of the makings of a sleeper hit. Square Enix’s open-world RPG holds the potential to deliver huge on both its narrative and gameplay, from its fascinating Isekai premise to its frenetic “magic parkour” traversal system. The developer is charged with making the “highest quality visuals ever” for an open-world video game, and it was all realized by a superstar writing team headed by Gary Whitta (Rogue: One: A Star Wars Story) and Amy Hennig (Uncharted)..

Ghostwire: Tokyo

Ghostwire: Tokyo is a spectral first-person game designed by horror legend Shinji Mikami and Tango Gameworks (The Evil Within) in which 99% of Tokyo’s population has mysteriously vanished. Despite the studio’s pedigree, Tango claims Ghostwire is a “thriller” rather than an action-adventure with “mysterious and creepy elements.”

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is a 3D adventure located in an abandoned, overgrown city that is the first mainline Kirby game since 2018. The Switch exclusive is scheduled to be released in Spring 2022.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga will be released in 2022, after multiple delays that date back to 2020. The Skywalker Saga is an entirely new retelling of all nine mainline Star Wars movies created in an all-new game engine, and it is dubbed the “biggest” LEGO game ever by developer TT Games.

Star Trek: Resurgence

Resurgence is a new studio that hires over 20 ex-Telltale developers and is a post-TNG Star Trek narrative-adventure. Dialogue options/conversations will be featured prominently in Resurgence, surprising given the staff’s pedigree, though developer Dramatic Labs says there will be action sequences as well. The game features all-new characters as well as fan favorites such as Spock, and it is a unique story about the clash of two alien civilizations.

Saints Row

The rebooted Saints Row is decidedly less whacky than the series’ previous two entries, harking back to a balance of silly and grounded that was last shown in Saints Row: The Third. Longtime Saints Row fans were dubious about the reveal, but Volition is confident in its vision, reacting to backlash by stating, “Not backing down on this game.”

Redfall

Redfall is the next game from Arkane Austin, the studio behind the excellent Prey in 2017. The co-op shooter, which is located in the island town of Redfall, Massachusetts, lets you (and up to three friends) loose in a vampire-filled open world. It’ll be an Xbox Series X. It’ll be available on Game Pass on Day One, and it’ll be both S and PC exclusive.

Scorn

When Scorn resurfaced in May 2020 with an all-new trailer featuring its H.R., we were taken aback (and delighted). Agnostic aesthetic with a Giger-inspired aesthetic. In 2022, the first-person horror game will finally be released as an Xbox Series X. S is a only available console option.

Starfield

Another Xbox Series X. Starfield is Todd Howard’s and Bethesda Game Studios’ next epic solo-player RPG, which is available only on the S and PC. Starfield is described by Howard as “Skyrim in space,” though he also adds that it is “a bit more hardcore of a role-playing game than we’ve been in the past.” It will be Bethesda’s first game developed using its Creation Engine 2.

While we have yet to experience gameplay, BGS’ vision for Starfield grew more obvious over the past year; we now know details on Starfield’s mod support, robust character customization, first- and third-person viewpoints, and main factions.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum

2022 prepares gamers with another opportunity to take to Middle-earth, this time as the mischievous Gollum. Gollum isn’t an open-world action-RPG, rather a narrative-focused adventure with a focus on stealth and platforming, unlike Lord of the Rings’ previous Shadow of.

Company of Heroes 3

After a nine-year hiatus, Relic’s legendary World War 2 RTS arrives in 2022. The Mediterranean theater is the setting for Company of Heroes 3, which brings new features to the series such as tactical pause and a fully dynamic campaign map. Relic is also looking to its past for Company Heroes 3, while looking ahead with fresh innovations; the studio says this third installment will be more like the original Company of Heroes than its sequel.

Homeworld 3

Homeworld 3’s nearly 20-year wait will draw to an end in late 2022, when Gearbox delivers the long-awaited space RTS sequel. Homeworld 3, established generations after the events of Homeworld 2, lifts the stakes with larger-scale battles, higher unit caps, and mammoth structures. According to developer Blackbird, it will have a campaign, multiplayer, and a co-op mode with aroguelike twist.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns

The next game from renowned strategy studio Firaxis is Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Notable Marvel heroes such as Iron Man, Captain America, Doctor Strange, and Wolverine will accompany you on your quest to bring down Lilith as a highly customizable character known as The Hunter. Midnight Suns is a unique title from the studio’s past work, as it incorporates a card battle system into its broader tactics gameplay. Similar to games like Slay the Spire, the system joins abilities to cards in a deck.

A Plague Tale: Requiem

A Plague Tale: Requiem is Asobo Studio’s follow-up to A Plague Tale : Innocence, which was released at E3 2021. The first was rated as one of 2019’s finest narrative-focused games, and Requiem hopes to improve on that success with the return of Amicia and Hugo, brother-sister protagonists. At launch, it will be available through Xbox Game Pass.

Arc Raiders

Arc Raiders is a co-op shooter built by Embark Studios, a team led by former EA executive Patrick Söderlund and composed of ex-DICE developers who worked on Battlefield and Star Wars: Battlefront. The free-to-play third-person shooter features three-player co-op and a focus on teamwork, and is located in a gorgeous sci-fi world.

Ark 2

Giant dinosaurs and Vin Diesel star in the video game Ark 2. It’s an action-adventure/survival game located in a hostile world that incorporates prehistoric environments and far-future technology, so that should be enough to base your purchasing decision on, if you need more information.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is a first-person, open-world action-adventure game located in a never-before-seen part of Pandora, which was announced back in 2017 and then revealed in 2021. Frontiers of Pandora, like the film, pits the Na’vi against humans and their mechs. It’s in the works at Massive Entertainment, the Ubisoft studio behind The Division.

Bayonetta 3

In September 2021, four years after the game’s first announcement, PlatinumGames finally showcased off Bayonetta 3. The long-awaited reveal showcased off Bayonetta’s new moves and hairstyle, as well as our first glimpse of new enemies and areas within Bayonett 3’s ruined Tokyo. It’ll be available exclusively on Switch in 2022.

The Callisto Protocol

The Callisto Protocol, a new sci-fi/horror game led by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield, is going to be a must-watch for horror fans. The Callisto Protocol appears to be a Dead Space spiritual successor, but it is actually located in the same universe as the PUBG game. Regardless, Schofield and co. began to work. are charged with making the scariest game on next-gen platforms.

God of War Ragnarok

 

God of War: Ragnarok is undoubtedly Sony’s best first-party release of 2022. Ragnarok continues Kratos and Atreus’ father-son story while including other characters from Norse mythology such as Thor and Odin.

Gotham Knights

Batman is no longer live, and Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, and Red Hood, the four playable characters in Gotham Knights, have assumed over the duties of defending Gotham. The third-person brawler supports one-player and two-player co-op with a combat system that has been “entirely revamped” from the Batman Arkham game by the developer.

Hogwarts Legacy

Harry Potter fans will finally be able to embark on their own adventure through the Wizarding World in the year 22nd. Hindus Legacy is based on teaser footage and features many of the activities you’d expect from a true Harry Potter RPG: character creation, the Sorting Ceremony, magic lessons, potion brewing, Quidditch, and more. It will be dropped shortly after April 15th, according to reports.

Kerbal Space Program 2

In 2022, the popular space/physics sim Kerbal Space Program will return. New parts, spacecrafts, and buildings are presented in the sequel, as well as enhanced quality of life such as a moveable launch tower and a skippable launch countdown. It’s “building a steady foundation on which players and modders alike can build for another decade or more,” according to developer Intercept Games.

Layers of Fear 2022

In 2022, a new horror game in the Layers of Fear series is scheduled to be released. Bloober Team, a developer, released a teaser trailer for the project, which featured Unreal Engine 5 as a reference. Layers of Fear 2, the series’ previous installment, was released in 2019 and obtained a 9/10 rating from Clonotech.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2

Despite the fact that Elden Ring, Starfield, and the next God of War are due out in 2022, the year’s best game is probably Breath of the Wild 2 (official title TBA). Nintendo has been tight-lipped about the sequel thus far, though it did show off some gameplay for Breath of the Wild 2 at E3 2021. Breath of the Wild is listed at number five on our list of the greatest video games of all time and at number one on our top list of best Switch games.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope

In 2022, Mario and Ubisoft continue their unexpected collaboration with Mario Rabbids Sparks of Hope, a sequel to 2017’s Mario and Rabbids Battle Kingdom. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and their Rabbid counterparts are among the nine playable characters in the follow-up, which features less linear levels, a more fluid combat system, and less linear levels.

Nightingale

Nightingale is a shared-world game developed by Inflexion Games, a new studio composed of ex-BioWare developers, including former GM Aaryn Flynn of the renowned studio. It’s a survival-crafting game that features guns, melee weapons, and magic in first-person combat. Nightingale is situated in a fantastical Victorian setting, which Flynn describes as “as vibrant and full of history and life as anything we’ve worked on in the past.”

The Outlast Trials

The Outlast Trials is a co-op spin on Red Barrel’s terrifying horror franchise in which you must survive sadistic, Cold War-era human experiments. Outlast Trials can be done solo or with up to three others, despite the fact that the series’ first two games were strictly single-player. As the developer put it, “It’s always better to shit your pants in good company.”

Shadow Warrior 3

Shadow Warrior, a fast-action FPS that has been inactive since 2016, will return with Shadow Warrior 3 in 2022. The protagonist Lo Wang and his sidekick Orochi Zilla cast sail on a mission to reclaim an ancient dragon they had unwillingly freed from its eternal prison in the series’ next adventure.

Sonic Frontiers

Sega officially unveiled Sonic Frontiers, the next main entry in the blue blur’s series, after months of rumors and speculation. Takashi Iizuka of Sonic Studio has dropped our first formal teaser for the game, which teases the “open zone” gameplay, environments, and more in a game that attempts to “lay the foundation” for future Sonic titles.

Splatoon 3

The colorful shooter is back with its familiar ink-splattering multiplayer and an all-new single-player campaign. The campaign, titled Return of the Mammalians, is focused on the reintroduction of mammals to the Splatoon world. Multi-player, on the other hand, maintains its core mechanics while offering unique weapons and customization options.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is a one-to-four-player action game located in an open-world Metropolis that is based on the same universe as Rocksteady’s Batman Akrham series. Harley Quinn, King Shark, Deadshot, and Captain Boomerang are among the playable characters, each with their own special abilities and customizable weapons.
