While Marvel’s What If…? will continue the legacy of many MCU characters, the series also represents a farewell, as it will feature Chadwick Boseman’s final performance as T’Challa. The late Black Panther star reprises his role in the animated series, voicing a version of T’Challa removed from Wakanda. What if …?? We will look at a possible reality in which Yondu adopts T’Challa’s Peter Quill instead of Chris Pratt, and the character becomes Star-Lord rather than the Black Panther.

IGN met with What If …? during a junket to promote the Disney Plus series. A.C. Bradley, the series creator, and Bryan Andrews, the director, sat down with IGN to talk about it. Andrews shared his memories of Boseman’s involvement in the series as well as the actor’s excitement about playing a lighter T’Challa, freed from the heavy crown.

“[Boseman] might have been one the earliest [of] voice actors to get back to us and was just as like, ‘Yeah man.’ Then we were like, “Really?” We were so happy. It was like Chadwick is into this. Andrews spoke to IGN. Andrews said that he loved that he could play a T’Challa without the title of king. He could crack jokes, flirt with the off-again love interests, and be lighter.

He was passionate about it, and it was great to work with him. He brought so many things to the table. It’s Chadwick. Andrews continued. Andrews said, “He had a great time. He found it very important. We loved that he understood what we were trying, the idea that there’s this universe, but he’s who he’s and doesn’t change. It’s not the universe changing around him. It was amazing. It was great to have him here.”

Marvel’s What If …? will begin its ten-episode run on August 11, when the series premieres on Disney Plus. Already, a second season is in development. Read more about the show. 3.
